Unknown wild Dog of Central Europe.

Scientific names: Canis lupus minor, given by 
M. Mojsisovics in 1887; Canis aureus hungaricus, 
renamed by Gyula Éhik in 1938.

Variant name: Rohrwolf (German).

Physical description: Like a small wolf.

Distribution: Hungary; eastern Austria.

Present status: Apparently became extinct in 
the early twentieth century. Some museum 
specimens exist.

Possible explanations: 
(1) A diminutive subspecies of Gray wolf 
(Canis lupus), first suggested by M. 
Mojsisovics and now the generally accepted 
(2) A large Golden jackal (Canis aureus), 
proposed by János Szunyoghy.
